چکیده

A number of nuclear power plant postulated accident scenarios show the overwhelming presence of radioiodines in the mix of a radioactive release. The effectual manifestations of radioiodines on an unprotected thyroid gland can be medically devastating. The importance of the thyroid gland in maintaining the harmonious functioning of the body is enormous, and the role of potassium iodide in protecting the thyroid gland from overdose of radioiodines is undeniable. The availability of iodine is of utmost importance to our health. However, its excess may have serious consequences. On the one hand, this characteristic allows successful treatment of thyroid diseases; on the other, it presents a challenge when large amounts of radioiodines are present in the environment. Recent documentation on thyroid abnormalities observed in the population of southern Belarus and northern Ukraine, following the Chernobyl accident, reveals adverse effects, ranging from functional disorders to increased incidence of thyroid carcinoma. This and other recent findings may influence our decision-making process regarding the preventive use of potassium iodide. Logistical and other difficulties will affect the timely and proper distribution to “general” population. Mechanisms, available in a nuclear power plant in reducing radioiodine release, often play an important role in quantifying the radionuclide inventory. Also, protective measure scheme for the early phase of an accident, and restrictions in food consumption in the postemergency phase will add to the qualification of administering potassium iodide. The difference in designs between the U.S. and a large number of non-U.S. plants should be considered. Proper federal guidance should be in place for the state and local officials to formulate informed decisions in the planning stage, and implement them with least difficulties. It is suggested that the decision-making process regarding administration of potassium iodide be left with the state and local officials.

Antioxidant and immune gene expression in zebra fish (Danio rerio)

Iodine is the main ingredient produced by the thyroid hormone, which playa a central role in the metabolism and the immune system. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of feeding Artemia fransiscana enriched with potassium iodide on antioxidant and immune gene expression in zebra fish (Danio rerio). Zebra larvae with an average weight of 2±0.01 mg were randomly distributed into 4 trea...

Potassium carbonate: a highly efficient catalyst for the acylation of alcohols, phenols and thiols under mild conditions

A general, mild and efficient protocol has been developed for the synthesis of esters and thioesters. The process has been taking place using tetra n-butylammonium iodide (TBAI) as a phase-transfer catalyst and in the presence of potassium carbonate (K2CO3). A wide range of esters and thioesters was prepared in high yields and suitable times by the treatment of alcohols, phenols and thiols with...

Potassium iodide, but not potassium iodate, as a potential protective agent against oxidative damage to membrane lipids in porcine thyroid

BACKGROUND Fenton reaction (Fe2++H2O2→Fe3++•OH+OH-) is of special significance in the thyroid gland, as both its substrates, i.e. H2O2 and Fe2+, are required for thyroid hormone synthesis. Also iodine, an essential element supplied by the diet, is indispensable for thyroid hormone synthesis. It is well known that iodine affects red-ox balance. One of the most frequently examined oxidative proce...

Potassium iodide in the treatment of syphilis.

Potassium iodide is not an antispirochaetal agent, and hence has no value in the treatment of early syphilis. Whether the drug exerts an effect upon the healing of lesions of late syphilis has never been established with certainty, but generations of clinical observers believed that such an effect was demonstrable. The controversy is no longer of importance, as the arsenicals and penicillin are...

The frictional properties of thin inorganic halide films on iron measured in ultrahigh vacuum

Friction coefficients are measured in ultrahigh vacuum using a tungsten carbide tribopin against thin films of sodium chloride and potassium iodide deposited onto clean iron. It is found, in accordance with previous measurements for potassium chloride on iron, that the friction coefficient falls from an initial value of 2 for the clean iron surface to a minimum value after a few tens of Ångstro...
